For decades, the gardens of Can Morgat grew abundantly, with trees and vegetation weaving their way through the estate. While this lush greenery created a picturesque landscape, it also presented hidden challenges to the estate’s structures and safety.

As part of Can Morgat’s broader restoration project, the clearing of the gardens was carefully and expertly carried out by the Forestry Brigade from the Centre El Puig of the County Council of Pla de l'Estany, to whom we extend our sincere thanks for their dedicated work.

Over the years, towering cypress and pine trees, some exceeding 20 metres in height, had grown perilously close to the main building, annexes, hermitage, and the estate’s stone walls and staircase. While their roots were a marvel of nature, they had begun to compromise the stability of the structures they bordered. Additionally, some of the pine trees had become inclined, posing a risk of falling onto the road and pedestrian path, especially during storms or high winds.

In certain areas of the estate, roots had breached the walls, damaged the roof of the main building, and allowed rainwater to seep in, resulting in mould and moisture-related deterioration of the wooden beams, walls, and terraces.

At the hermitage, the encroaching roots caused part of the foundation to shift, leading to a drop in the floor level and visible cracks in the ceiling — clear signs of the outer wall gradually breaking away.

Structural assessments by experts confirmed that immediate action was necessary to prevent further deterioration.

Left unaddressed, the invasive tree roots and expansive canopies would have continued to weaken the estate, jeopardizing both its structural integrity and the safety of those who pass by. Moreover, the dense vegetation presented a wildfire risk that could not be overlooked.

Balancing Preservation and Renewal

The decision to remove most of the trees near Can Morgat's main building, hermitage, garden walls, and staircase was not made lightly. These towering cypress trees had long been a striking feature of Can Morgat, admired both from within its gardens and from the surrounding streets. However, preserving the estate — a landmark of immense historical and cultural significance — had to take precedence.

It is important to note that no protected trees were removed, and all actions were taken in full compliance with local regulations. This decision, made with the utmost respect for Can Morgat’s legacy, was driven by the need to protect the estate and ensure its long-term preservation.

Today, as sunlight streams through the gardens once again, we are beginning to see the positive effects of this intervention. Areas that were once shaded and damp are now drying out, helping to stabilize the estate’s walls, terraces, and staircase. Moss growth, which had accelerated the deterioration of these structures, is slowly receding. Inside the buildings, the increased natural light creates a brighter, more inviting atmosphere, while also aiding in regulating the indoor climate.

A Bright Future for Can Morgat’s Gardens

While the gardens may look very different now, this is just the beginning of their transformation. Once the restoration of Can Morgat’s structures is complete, the gardens will once again thrive — reimagined as a harmonious space that reflects the region’s natural heritage. Plans are already in motion to plant vibrant greenery, creating a serene environment where beauty and history coexist.

Our vision is to nurture gardens that celebrate Can Morgat while ensuring they are thoughtfully maintained, preventing overgrowth and safeguarding the estate for future generations. We deeply understand the connection many people may have to the estate’s greenery, and we share that love for nature. It is our hope that the reimagined gardens will not only honour the past but also inspire a sense of wonder and peace in all who visit.
