The New Custodians of Can Morgat

We are Maarten and Monika, the new custodians of Can Morgat. Perhaps you have seen us around Can Morgat or while walking through Banyoles or Porqueres. Some of you may already know us personally and have shared stories with us, while others might be curious about who we are and how this incredible journey began... 😊

Joining us on this journey is Spirit — our sweet-natured border collie and the new mascot of Can Morgat. Spirit has quickly become the heart of the estate, embodying its warmth and energy. She adores people and can often be found lounging under the trees or supervising any activity, especially when there is wood chipping, a lawn mower, or a quad bike involved. Those are her favourite moments to playfully bark and join the excitement. While Spirit welcomes visitors with her friendly nature, she also takes her role as guardian seriously, making sure the estate remains peaceful. She reminds us of the joy, humour, and companionship that animals bring to our lives every day.

Our story with Can Morgat began in 2022, on the day we visited the estate for the very first time. At that time, we had been extensively searching for the right place for our future project, visiting countless estates — each missing one or more elements essential for the realization of our vision. Some places were far too secluded, located deep in the woods or nature parks, requiring long drives over stony soil paths; others lacked access to water sources, pastures, or fields. Some were in a state of ruin, demanding a total rebuild, while others were beautifully renovated but, in one way or another, unsuitable for our needs. After so many visits and dashed hopes, we were ready to pause our search indefinitely.

When we arrived at Can Morgat, we were utterly unprepared for what awaited us. The lake, the greenery, the tranquillity, the sweet, fresh air… And then, the estate itself — its grandeur, its historical essence, its endless potential. Walking through the ancient part of the house, our hearts raced as we imagined the countless lives, stories, and footsteps that had passed through its corridors over the centuries. The estate seemed endless, with doors and rooms leading to more doors and rooms, numerous interconnected and separate building areas, and even a hermitage. Time seemed to stand still, and at that moment, we knew: This was it.

Although the months following our visit were filled with uncertainties — as nothing in the real estate world is certain until it is signed in black and white — when the former owners finally decided to pass Can Morgat on to us, our hearts were filled with gratitude. Some things in life feel as though they are meant to be, and Can Morgat definitely feels that way... 😊

What Do We Bring to Can Morgat?

First and foremost, we bring boundless enthusiasm, energy, and dedication to restoring Can Morgat and its natural surroundings. Our mission is to breathe new life into every corner of Can Morgat — its buildings, gardens, and lands. Through various projects, we aim to awaken the heart of the estate and ensure that everyone who visits leaves feeling inspired, invigorated, and uplifted. Whether through rural tourism focused on holistic well-being, extraordinary culinary experiences, artisanal craftsmanship, or regenerative agriculture, our vision is to create a place where people can learn, grow, and experience the best of life first-hand.

Professionally, we bring diverse and complementary expertise. Maarten’s extensive background in business and entrepreneurship equips him with the ability to transform visions into reality and create sustainable solutions. Monika brings a profound focus on holistic well-being, blending the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda — the "Science of Life" — with modern scientific discoveries. Currently pursuing a Doctorate in Bioenergetic Therapy and Quantum Healing, she looks forward to sharing these insights with those seeking to expand their understanding and horizons. Together, we combine our skills to create something truly special — enriching experiences guided by a shared desire to help, inspire, and empower.

What Defines Us

Born in different corners of Europe — Maarten in Belgium and Monika in the Czech Republic — our journeys have taken us across the globe, introducing us to remarkable people from all walks of life. These experiences have taught us that origins do not define us; it is who we choose to become, how we live, and the good we bring into the world that truly matters.

On a deeper level, we all share a universal language — the language of the heart, resonating with a common desire for kindness, acceptance, and the joy of sharing goodness. This belief inspires us profoundly and lies at the core of everything we aspire Can Morgat to embody.
